Abstract
Most Achilles tendon injuries result from acute trauma. It is generally accepted that surgical repair of fresh ruptures of the tendo Achilles gives excellent results. But complication such as would infection, skin necrosis, and scar adhesion have been reported after surgical repair. We have reviewed 28 cases of acute rupture of the Achilles tendon seen at Konkuk university Seoul Hospital during the six-year period (from November, 1991 to October, 1997). All the patients underwent surgically and were followed up for minimum of 6 months.
The results were as follows :
1. In sex distribution, there were 21 male cases and 7 female cases. The mean age for 28 patients was 36 years. Fifteen cases(54%) were in the fourth decade.
2. The sites of rupture were on the right side in 20 cases(71%) and the level of the rupture was at the tendon itself in 22 cases(78%).
3. The course of injury was indirect trauma in 19 cases(68%) and direct trauma in 9 cases(32%).
4. Positive Thompson test was noted in 21 cases(75%).
5. Good results were obtained by operation in 28 cases and not related to the operative techniques(i.e end to end anastomosis, Lynn technique of Lindholm technique) in acute cases, operative techniques(i.e end to end anastomosis, Lynn technique of Lindholm technique) in acute cases.
